Plugging the Income Gap: Environmental Options for Upland Farms: A Case Study in Pendle Hill
12 May 2021
Dr Alison Holt and Professor Emeritus Joe Morris walk us through their study titled "Plugging the Income Gap: Environmental Options for Upland Farms: A Case Study in Pendle Hill, Lancashire".
This study assesses the ability of new Environmental Land Management (ELM) schemes to plug the income gap left by the removal of Basic Payment Schemes (BPS) post-Brexit. The authors used a combination of natural capital assessments and farm business appraisals on 3 upland farms in Lancashire to explore whether participation in ELMs could deliver both the intended environmental outcomes and a financially sustainable farming business.
