Making more of your research: Communications 101 with the CCC comms team
8 September 2021
Communicating technical research to a non-specialist audience can be a challenge. In this session with two communicators from the independent Climate Change Committee, which advises Government on tackling one of the most pressing issues of our time, we delve into some of the dos and don'ts when it comes to getting your message across. Jo Barrett, Head of Communications, and Tom Dooks, Communications Office, will share their insights and answer your questions about what works, and what you can leave on the cutting-room floor.
Jo Barret, Head of Communications at the Climate Change Committee, is an experienced communicator specialising in comms strategy, media relations, crisis comms, and climate change. She started life as a journalist before taking on communications roles in a series of NGOs including CARE International, RedR UK, and the Coalition for the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Jo has been at the Climate Change Committee for more than six years. In that time she has overseen a major overhaul of the CCC’s communications offer, helping to put it at the forefront of independent climate change commentary in the UK.
Tom Dooks works at the Climate Change Committee, covering all areas of communications and specialising in digital communications. In a career spanning six years, Tom previously worked in the energy and industrials team at H+K Strategies working across national and international clients. Prior to that he worked at the energy trade association, Energy UK, supporting the association to represent the industry and leading a Young Energy Professionals Forum.
